I am enlightened, thanks pal.

But how does chess work with guns? they would shoot all the pawns down instantly... and the king would be checkmated within seconds.

On a serious note.
That already exists.
Chess is portrayed as a rags to riches game. A normal person can become a king.
Incorrect!!!!! pawns cannot become kings, they become QUEENS.
So you want another piece that can JUMP?
Here's one: the atheist.
replaces the queen-side bishop and can move 3 tiles in any direction, jumping over other pieces if need be. How's that?
For TV shows, such as the Star Trek series, you only need about 10 regular cast members.
Most shows get by with fewer. Probably closer to 7.
Here's a new one; The Imprisoner
This one moves like a rook and a king, but it only captures 2 squares diagonally.
White rook is the Imprisoner, black pawns are the movement, black knight is the capturing range.
Whenever the Imprisoner captures a pawn, the player who did the capture can choose another one of their opponent's pawns to remove from the game. If you have lost any pawns so far, you can instead choose to replace one of your pawns on the 2nd rank.
Weird ideas , but a paladin and a Marshall would be cool. Paladin moves like a knight and then moves one space forward. The Marshall moves like a rook but once it can block being captured. The enemy moves to the space before the space the Marshalls on. The Marshall also can’t castle. I’d make it now a 10x10 board . Paladins in the front,Marshall's in the back. Marshall is eight points, paladin is four points.
Paladin looks like a knight in a mask and a sword and a shield. Marshall looks poke a rook with a shield
I actually legitimately completely have the truth to the question to if chess had a new piece:
a fairy piece existing within chess.com's engine
The Dweller
okay, its ACTUALLY called the Alibaba. It combines the dababa which jumps 2 tiles horizontally or vertically, and the alfil which moves 2 tiles diagonally. I changed the name to Dweller since Alibaba is really dumb sounding, and uncreative. Literally just alfil and dababa mashed into one word. Have some creativity people.
Let's get back on track. The Dweller/Alibaba moves exactly 2 tiles in any direction, jumping over anything 1 tile away. Kind of like a wide king would move. I'd say it fits into the genetic structure or whatever of Chess. It ain't too practical in up close combat, but it can still be nasty with the right plays. It would compliment the knight well since it also jumps like them, and the knight can cover the weaknesses of a Dweller's movement.
I wanted to add the combination of the Alfil and the Dababa instead of individually because...
Those two pieces would suck on their own. Why even bother with two spaces forward when bishops, rooks and the queen already move infinitely in those directions anyway?! Besides, the Dweller can jump.
Where would the Dweller be placed? I'd say you'd have two of them, placed between your rooks and knights. The board would be 10 by 8 to make room for the Dwellers on each player's side. Why not just 10 by 10? I know the board would look odd, but its either that or make pawns have to travel longer distances.
Before you ask, Dwellers cost 3 material, like bishops and knights do. And you can get a Dweller through promo.
That ends my TED talk
Great! Now i have a bigger question, in some versions of chess, the rook is an entire flipping boat.
when and how did history become like that?
