Chess Uncertainty

I’ve been thinking, how can we introduce an element of uncertainty into chess?

Typically, this is handled by luck in most games. For example, in poker, players receive random cards from a deck. Poker is special because it also offers the player the ability to bluff (ie lie!), adding yet another element of strategy.

What would you consider adding to chess to add an element of uncertainty or luck?

Here are my ideas:

1. When a piece attacks another, of the same piece, dice are rolled. Attacker roles two dice, defender one. Highest value wins, tie goes to defender.

2. Prior to game start, each player configures their back row (ie K, Q, B, K, and R) as they wish. Neither knows what the other has chosen until the game starts.

Now for the crazy kicker: what if the Chess.com engine allowed developers to write their own rules for the game, and monetized (similar to Roblox)? Magnus could develop his flavor, and be rewarded based on how many people played his game.
