Because they are the least materialistic of all the nations.

Thats funny because they play the most materalistic chess. If they can take something, they will, wether it makes sense or not.

Okay. So let's time travel back to 1989 and answer this question:

"Why aren't there any chess grandmasters in India?"

Literacy rate then was very less and government was not supportive to sports Our economy wasn't as high as it is now and people couldn't travel to even other states, forget other countries.

Btw both formal training is a must along with natural intelligence to become a GM. My father from the 80's knew how to play and thought it to me when i was a kid. Now i have the opportunity to learn and expand my skills and reached around 1800 in a few years but still unable to beat my father who never played online chess or otb tourneys.

1) In Germany we like to have a Coffee in the Afternoon with a piece of cake. For breakfast many like to have ceral. It has nothing to do with how good or bad they play chess.

2) Chess is incredibly popular in germany, chess clubs can be found everywhere.

3) Germans work really hard, they also enjoy playing chess a lot but they devide their time so that everything has its place. We take out work ethics very seriously.

4) Chess does not originate from india.

For 1) cereal and coffee with cake has no near match to our diet. We use atleast 15-20 ingredients in a normal lunch, all high in nutrients and vegetarian. It definitely has a high impact.

4) Where did it originate from then ?

Im sorry but food is not related to intelligence grin.png

It originated from where exactly it was changed into the specific game this website is named after, chess. That was not in india as far as i know and it does not matter if there have been games before that which inspired chess, those where different games.

#65 So according to you, chess was invented in 1561 (not the perfect year but it is said that the exact chess we play today was introduced in 1200-1600). Is that right?

Arround that afik.

Chess is not from india, Chaturanga is (afaik). I just find the arguments brought up to answer the question such as "Chess is an indian thing because they invented it like everything else according to what my uncle told my neighbour" silly. Chess is not specifically an indian thing and neither is it an indian game. This does not answer the question. However, i am growing tired of the argument here at this point.

India and China make up lots of the world's population (about 17% of the world lives in India) so it's very natural they have lots of good players.

#68 Well that's one way to think about it, and that's a debate for another day. But his #4 point is about psychology, not logic, whether chess originated in India or not, the average person thinks it originated from India (which doesn't necessarily mean it's true tho, but that's his mindset), and the average guy doesn't care to find out its "true origins", so he believes it. And thus, he feels proud of his country and wants to play the game. And now suddenly, everyone in India wants to play chess, and naturally, a fraction of them, continue playing chess, and a fraction of those players take it as a hobby, and a fraction of those players aim for chess titles, and a fraction of them achieve it and become the "good players the OP is talking about". Now naturally, this last fraction is insignificant in the average country, but considering the population of India, this fraction becomes significant, and I believe that's the answer to the OP. So my final point to @AmbieMina, The origins of chess is a debate yet to be solved, and it wouldn't be wise to bring that argument in this thread, the above is the explanation of the 4th point of his comment and as I said, it isn't about logic, it's about psychology. (Congrats if you've managed to read all of that lol)

I dont understand why this one german is opposing a universally accepted fact though unable to counter it properly. Bro is barely 500 on chess.com and wants to talk chess history. No offence.. i want you to counter with strong proof and above average IQ statements.

Apparently we can play the Chaturanga/Shatranj game variant on Chess.com happy.png I have never tried it but am happy if anyone wants to sometime haha
