I know what Wiki says but I remember being stunned when Anna said her parents just never managed to marry and live in some kind of "civil union"

I see then, no need to search. I thought it's about some claims like to "they don't actually live together". In many countries this just doesn't matter, enough to provide some utility bill to prove that you live together. Civil unions have same rights as marriage in both Sweden and Spain except for the right to adopt a child. Informally they're still a husband and wife, that presence of a piece of paper would change nothing in their life, this isn't worth mentioning.
