If you can challenge any titled player (living or dead) in a chess match, who would it be?

I would want to challenge either Magnus Carlsen, Mikhail Tal, Gothamchess or Hikaru.

chesssblackbelt

Tal because he's dead so I can win

ChimpCh

Vishwanathan Anand, Magnus Carlsen, GothamChess, and Paul Morphy

chesssblackbelt

The people saying Gotham are strange

You can challenge any player and you don't even pick a GM?

Armatise

Oh, Paul Morphy is a good one.

ChimpCh

In my opinion, the title of a player is not as important as what the player has done for the game. Gotham has popularized the game so much, riding the wave of popularity during 2020 onwards. I believe he is as worthy as any top player

Badly_Beaten_I_Will_Be

GothamChess even though I suck at chess.

Armatise

@chesssblackbelt, I bet most people are going to pick either Hikaru, Magnus Carlsen, or Gothamchess because they're too popular.

So why not play the actress from queen's gambit then? She's done more for chess popularity than Gotham has

ZenChess210

If i was good enough, Magnus or Hikaru

Gothamchess did a video about The Queen's Gambit, I think.

chesssblackbelt

What's that prove?

The queen's gambit was the most watched show in like 10 different countries

Gothamchess isn't a popular streamer outside of chess circles

chesssblackbelt

So if you want to play the person who influenced chess the most then you need to play that ginger lady from the queen's gambit

Armatise

@chesssblackbelt Don't forget about Capablanca, Morphy, and Bobby Fischer. They influenced chess the most during the 19th century.

chesssblackbelt

They only influenced Americans

Queen's gambit was international

Armatise

Capablanca was a Cuban chess master who was renowned for his brilliant endgame play.

Armatise

Also @chesssblackbelt, the Queen Gambit is an interesting drama series. But you should read this:

Ok "After four weeks it had become Netflix's most-watched scripted miniseries, making it Netflix's top program in 63 countries"

That is more influential than anything Capablanca has done

Armatise

Read this then:

Everyone knows he's a Cuban chess master, not an American chess master. You are correct that Paul Morphy and Bobby Fisher are American chess masters.
