Yanks vs. rest of the world

Well, that would be interesting all political affiliations aside...

Regarding world against the US, I’m not too excited about it.  I think a vote chess tournament by country would be interesting.  I’d enjoy reading the archives afterward.  But if I wanted to play with all Americans I could do that every Monday night in the next town.

Regarding “halfwit,” … hey I resemble that remark!  Actually, from a glass-half-full perspective, halfwit isn’t too bad.  I’ve only once in my life felt entirely full witted.  I got a perfect score including the extra credit problem, in a final exam on numerical solutions to advanced differential equations.  The average grade on the exam was 50%.  OK, I’m done bragging.  In most things, including that subject now, I’m at best a halfwit.   In chess, I only know a nit of what there is to know.  I guess that makes me a nitwit.  So halfwit gives me too much credit.

The only positive this name calling and bashing thread could accomplish is; to create international country teams that would compete for bragging rights. It's not like Eric is siting around twiddling his thumbs though! If it ever comes to fruition sign me up for the stars and bars!!

Yes, Yankee originally referred to inhabitants of the New England states of the Northeast, and not entirely derogatory.  It meant “excellent” in some contexts. http://onlinedictionary.datasegment.com/word/yankee

I live in a small town in the Northwest.  For future reference, if intending to be derogatory, we in the Northwest should be referred to as hicks.  Cool

Don't worry about it, they just being pricks. It really isn't that bad being called a yank.
AquaMan

Exactly.  I think "yank" was meant at most as very light teasing, and I took the tone of the OP as being completely playful.

I don't tend to feel defensive about name calling in any event, as it usually says more about the sender than about the reciever.   For that reason, I don't wish to align myself with any name calling, unless it's nice names.  Smile

AquaMan must've read "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie.Wink

I'm in for the vote chess tourney, it sounds like fun.

AquaMan
I have read it, actually.  Great book :).  The vote chess game and re-match were over a while ago.  Yanks won.

That's a shame, I would've enjoyed playing.  Congratulations to America!

Is there somewhere that the game is recorded?

Cool games!

Gordon....you may not like Yankees, but the Army of the Potomac had a great ground game.

As for the world against us here in the chess world, it would be a good microcosm of the real world lately.  Develop your pieces.

You are right, Reb, about getting along (even if you are imitating Rodney King) ! The term "Yankee" originally applied to someone from Boston. Later it meant a New Englander. Then it came to mean a Northerner, as in the North in the American Civil War. I saw a water tower in the state of West Virginia that was painted with, "Yankee Go Home." This despite that state being formed by Virginians who were on the Northern (Union) side. Later Yankee would be applied to Americans. The term North American for Americans is just totally incorrect. Yankee is not inherently negative or positive, but any person using language can be negative. We could single out the origin of any writer here, and use it in a negative or a positive way.
