I like the idea. :) I think at the moment that the option is not available, but I might be wrong. :) I don't know if the site management can do this or not. :)
[VoteChess] VoteChess minileague or knockout tourney?
I think that a possibility is to organize something similar to the World League for the Team Matches.
Someone should get the load to organize the think: receive adhesion, make the season, collect intermediate results and publish final results.
I think this is an excellent idea, and here my format suggestion :
- let's make it a 5 or 6 teams competition
- let's call it "Vote Chess Masters", or any nice name you come up with
- the teams should be selected among the best scoring Vote chess teams %-age wise (I guess 80% would be a minimum)
- format is 2 vote chess games (white & black) against all other teams, one game at a time, so 4 or 5 ongoing games, no more
- scoring as in round robin (win = 1pt., draw =0,5),
- 3 days/move to build team momentum and research
- games should be started on different days of the week (Mon, Tue, Wed,...) so that the team work can be streamlined
And of course, let's invite Power of Chess top team
Wow, glad to see so much interest! Personally, I think it would be a lot of fun!
I think Francesco's idea of setting up something like the World League for Vote Chess is a great idea, as well as Links' idea of having a special group for that.
The format proposed by Hicetnunc sounds fantastic - I very much appreciate the idea of starting the games on different days of the week, so to have a "decalage".
Now the only thing we miss is a volunteer to coordinate this all - any takers? Ideally, somebody with some experience in organizing this kind of things would be the perfect choice...
If we set up the group, we can have the responsibles from each (interested) group joining to discuss the details. It will be their responsibility, then, to communicate within their teams - similarly to what has been done for the World League.
Links, you have my vote then! ;-)
Regarding reflection time: I too think 2 days/move could be a better option.
Regarding the teams: we have to find the right formula to make sure that we have a good representation, without too many parallel games. I think 5 to 6 parallel games would be the best option, but that would restrict the group to 6 to 7 teams...
What if we did it as knock-out, in several rounds?
I think 6 or 7 quality teams is a good start (think of the Rugby Tournoi des 6 nations). If the formula works ok, then we can expand it later.
As for the KO, well, I have the feeling it's less in accordance with the spirit of the competition, I mean quality... Besides, 2 games will be needed (no unfair advantage to white) and solving tie-breaks might prove tricky... some teams may have to wait longer between rounds than other... And who will be top seeded ? Not sure it would work
@links I suggested 3 days/move, just to make sure you wouldn't offer 1 day
Here is a list of candidate teams (not restrictive) : Power of Chess, Team Italia, Vote Cheers, Team Romania, Team China, Learning with fun, French Defence Fanatics.
That's seven.
Very good points, personally, I'm fine with all. For the team selection, I am fine because my team is there but of course we have to see what the others say - both the ones "invited" (we have to see if they agree...) and the ones left out (they may want to join as well, and we just say: "No"? ).
If 7 is too low (and it might be), we could arrange 2 groups of 7 (14 teams) and have winners (or top 2) play in a final match/group.
Kind of MBA thing : Southern Hemisphere / Northern Hemisphere, or first half of alphabet/second half, or a toss
I like that idea of the teams having groups and then playing in the final. However, I am not a proponent of the 3 days per move. It would take a very long time to complete. I would recommend one day per move. Also, it would be interesting to see how the French Defense Fanatics do as they may not be able to play the French Defense in every Black game. Unless that could be priorly arranged.
Personally, I am against 1day/move - for the kind of competition we want to set up, I honestly think it's not enough time to let the team properly discuss. I agree 3d/move is too much, so I think 2 is just the happy medium
Once the group is set up, though, we can take a vote and see what the majority would like to do!
This is a followup post to this post
The idea Linksspringer had has been the following:
Would it be an idea to organize a VC mini-league or maybe a knockout tourney for teams that value quality (teamwork, discussion, fun) over quantity?
I think it would be a very nice idea, but I wouldn't know (technically) how to do it - I know how to create an individual tournament, but not a tournament between groups. Could anyone with some experience in organizing this kind of tournaments post some options?
Thanks in advance,
Andrea
