I had that problem too going to standard from blitz. one thing that I did was I forced myself to spend at least 30 seconds on every move but the first 2(1. d4 and 2. c4 are pretty obvious to me) and during those 30 seconds, both look for other reasonable moves and calculate continuations for my main candidate move. If you're trying to decide between several good looking candidate moves, you will find you use more time than if you're just calculating what you already assumed to be the best move.
Time Management
Thanks! I'll try to utilize your suggestions, and hopefully that will improve my time management. By the way, I think I put this topic into the wrong forum
I wish I had your problem!
In my club I'll do fine in 5-10 min games, top 3 in my recent tournaments, but I'm getting in timetrouble when I play 90min-40moves +30min on the rest!
Losing on time against players I beat in blitz!
I need to do something with my timemanagement.
I could easy spend 60min on one move!
This task takes more than 5 min! This is the difference between blitz and long games, the quality of the game!
Though I found the next move, no doubt I would have messed up the continuation...which is why I don't get invited to Wijk aan Zee.
I've also had this problem! What really helped me on longer games was to really take time to understand exactly why did your opponent make that exact move he did and possibly calculate your opponent's continuation. This give's you a chance to blunt some of your opponents tactics while you still are in solid position ready to strike.
To be honest with you. Im also quite new with chess, so feel free to correct me and give your own opinions about what I said.
I am going to a big tournament in February, and there will be a standard time control. The problem is, I just can't think for 3 minutes on a move. I doh't know how people can think for that long. I tried practicing slow games, but I found I only use 5 minutes per game or so. HELP!
