Group training service offering

Hi guys,

I've decided to offer a new coaching service : group training.

The idea is to organize a live training interactive session with 3 students (a bit like in a real chess club). The session will feature a common theme of interest for the students : it can be a technical theme (ie. pawn endgames), some opening intro., or going interactively over some interesting master games to illustrate a strategic idea.

The session will last 4 hrs. and feature at least 2hrs of 'active training' : meaning you will have to think over positions and find moves (the best training method Smile).

Please see my coach page for details if you're interested or want to discuss the contents of future sessions.

Great idea? But how will it work? Will we be using Skype and the Live Board?

VLaurenT

Yes, Skype + interactive live board. It's as close as we can get of a real chess room. And it's limited to 3 people so that we can have a decent level of interaction even on the Internet.

Sounds good. Smile I've been thinking about it, and I think I would like to try such a session with the theme: How to keep the White advantage for 15 moves, in non-memorized lines - with the students playing the White side, and the coach playing Black, with discussions along the way about why certain moves are good, while other are not so good. Do you think this would be good idea for a session? I hope so, and I hope other students would like to try this as well. Smile

If you mean from the starting position, I think it's a bit difficult to implement : there are simply too many situations to consider.

However, an interesting training theme could be : how to win a won game ? Smile

cigoL

Yes, from the starting position. I don't see why it wouldn't work. However, I like your idea as well. How would you "define" a "won game"? Being ahead a pawn? Being ahead a Rook? Or...?

VLaurenT

Keeping white's edge in any opening line is not a skill I possess. I think you need to be an IM strength player (at least) to do that Smile

The process of selecting a good move when faced with an opening you don't know is something that I can help with.

And a won game at U1700 level would be a game where one side has at least a 2 pawns material advantage with positional balance or one piece advantage with some compensation for the opponent.

cigoL

I see what you mean. So, the process of selecting a good move is something I would be interested in. Especially during the first 15 moves of a game (in non-memorized lines).

I don't understand your last paragraph. A won game is a game with at least a 2 pawns material advantage, with positional balance. That I follow. But "one piece advantage with some compensation for the opponent", I don't. That sounds like less material compensation (1 pawn, not 2), and better terms for the opponent otherwise.

@cigoL  -- "Piece" in this context usually means minor piece - Knight or Bishop, which would be worth at least 3 pawns
