Schachgeek: I think you may be on to something here with the idea of casual play. Maybe people who play online are only playing to have something to do between one thing and another. People who make time to leave home and go to the local club may be more inclined to think they're actually 'doing' something. It just boggles my mind how many more people play online than OTB.
