The Bucholtz is a method for breaking ties. It depends of preference if you choose "Old" or "Progressive", either way, the computer is going to do the math if any ties occur. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buchholz_system
If you know the general skill levels of the players, you could assign three classes, Advanced, Intermediate, and Beginner. Then give them a default rating. For example; Advanced=1800, Intermediate=1500, Beginner =1200. OR you can just type them in as they register without ratings and let the chips fall where they may. Either way, the creme will rise to the top and if any strong players play each other early, it can reduce the chance of a tie at the end of the tournament.

I am going to organize a chess tournament for my colleagues. The number of players is about 40 to 50, so I will use Swiss system for the tournament. I have downloaded Chess Pairing Program at http://www.chess.com/download/view/chess-pairing-english-version for the forthcoming event but I have been confused about the way we create and select items on the New Tournament screen here:
In the System section, of course we choose “Swiss” but what about the Bucholtz’s? Should we choose Old or Progressive or neither of them, and what is the meaning of this option? Is Bucholtz point used to rank players when they have the same score after all?
In the Configurations section, all items are optional except for rating, and I am wondering what initial ratings should I set for nonprofessional chess players like us.
