I choose d4
Which is better: e4 or d4?
l think it's d4. It leads to all kinds if openings unlike e4. ( yes e4 also leads to many openings but d4 can lead to more AND better openings). e4 is a opening for beginners so if you are one then l would recommend e4. If you are advanced or intermediate then d4 is a better option.

This is nuts.

He is right. I play E4 and I can confirm he is right. The really good openings with E4 are very hard to learn, and with D4 you can just go queens gambit or smth

The Queen's Gambit is as complicated as the Ruy Lopez. And anyone who thinks the Sicilian is a complex mess should consider the Nimzo-Indian. If you pick a different move one than e4, you're just opting for a different set of problems to solve.
This debate reminds me of debates I've seen between agnostics, atheists, and theists. The agnostic thinks he's the most rational, because he's not exceeding his limits and making positive claims about the unknown. But the agnostic is, infact, the only one out of the 3 we know with certainty is not correct. Because either God exists, or God doesn't exist.... either 1. e4 is better, or 1. d4 is better. The fact you don't know which.... doesn't make you correct.
It's not a perfect analogy because the answer to the e4 vs. d4 debate is going to be partly subjective, and will depend on your goals... I've played both - I think I'd lean toward d4 being a bit more effective - it's less rote and people are extremely well booked vs. e4. On the flip side, one thing I do like about e4 is it's more forcing and compact, so it can reward being well booked. Most of the lines I play synergize better with e4 so I play that more than d4, however I think I'm more of a positional player and I might eventually migrate to d4.
Haven't been on this forum for 5 years.
And people got weaker in the meantime...
There's a steady stream of new dumb people to take the place of the trolls who get bored and take up another hobby.
all depends on your playstyle. if you like sharp, attacking positions e4 is probably a better choice. if you like to play solidly and build a slow advantage then d4. unless of course you’re a grandmaster then it’s probably all backwards lol
e4 is just as good as d4 - it's hard to choose the best opening. e4 supports rapid piece development as it immediately opens lines for the queen and bishop. However, the downside of this move is that it often leads to many drawish variations. On the other hand, d4 is frequently played at the highest levels for a reason, as it leads to more solid and complex positional play.
The ultimate choice of opening depends on your playing style. If you prefer quick and dynamic positions, e4 is a natural choice. On the other hand, players who enjoy long, strategic battles might lean towards d4, which opens the door to rich pawn structures and more flexible game plans.
I choose d4 because my favorite o
