Two Knights, Fritz Variation

This is a really fun (and solid) line. I've had a lot of success with it. Anybody else play it? Any games, traps, tricks, questions?

Ah, the Fritz Variation.  I love the Italian in general, but this is one of my favorite lines.

1.P-K4 P-K4 2.Kt-KB3 Kt-QB3 3.B-QB4 Kt-KB3 4.Kt-KN5 P-Q4 5.PxP Kt-Q5 6.P-QB3 P-QKt4 7.B-KB1 KtxP

My favorite variation is:

8.PxKt QxKt 9.BxP+ K-Q1 10.Q-KB3 B-QKt2 11.0-0 R-QKt1 12.PxP!

A translation for those that may take a while to read that:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nd4 6. c3 b5 7. Bf1 Nxd5

And his favourite variation:

8. cxd4 Qxg5 9. Bxb5+ Kd8 10. Qf3 Bb7 11. O-O Rb8 12. dxe5!

LOL, i grew up on that notation, didn't even notice...

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nd4? 6. d6! [Threatening both c7 and f7 and Black has no good way to respond]

If 6. ... Ne6 or 6. ... Be6 blocking the attack on f7 then a series of exchanges on e6 leaves black behind in development, with a weak e6 and e5 pawn and 2 pawns down.

No, no, no, it doesnt work like that.... For example:

Then it falls to  7. Bxf7+

How? Black isn't worse after 7. Bxf7+. In fact, with more active pieces, he might even be better than white.

Also not, eg

Incorrect. 7. Bxf7+ Ke7 (Ke8 isn't even a move...) 8. Bb3 Nxb3 9. axb3 h6 10. Nh3 (Nf3 is met by e4) Bg4 11. f3 (only plausable move) Bxh3 12. gxh3 and white is in a shambles! Black should easily be able to pick these pawns up later in the game, though if not, they are a useless commodity.

BtW, Bobby Fischer lost against this in 1963, against relatively unknown Karl Burger. It was a simul, but still...

If white isn't prepared, he gets into a world of hurt when he/she pushes the e pawn.

I play the Ulvestad Variation, which often transposes into the Fritz Variation. I like them, and I find that there's good compensation for the pawn.

Hmm, okay, well if that line doesn't work then I guess it should be fine!

Here's one of the greatest chess games ever played, between Yakov Estrin and Hans Berliner.  It starts out as the Ulvestad varation but transposes in the Fritz. The game is very complicated, it will take alot of studying to completely understand the positions.

You may be right..black is not so good from there. But I played Blitz Fritz for years and NEVER faced 7. Bf1. It's the book move, but it's too counterintuitive to find over the board.
