The German Opening

Sort:
Argonautidae

Among all the demons that haunt us in this vale of tears, there is one whose perfidy is unrivaled. Flowers wither in his presence, and children start crying even if his face remains hidden. His pervasive odour infiltrates our dreams, poisoning our minds and depriving us of rest. Everywhere he is, he turns joy into sorrow, and laughter into tears.

As you may have guessed, ladies, gentlemen, I am talking about this position:

The  German Opening tabiya.

German Opening? Isn't it just the most unambitious Giuoco Pianissimo ever played? It is, but be patient. I will explain myself.

For many years, the peaceful German people have been mocked for one single reason: they did not have a chess opening named after them. I wanted to solve this monumental injustice. I tried to invent an opening as a gift for them, but I failed miserably. Such a task is reserved for the wisest sub1000 players. I am not one of them.

I was determined to give the Germans the place they deserve in the chess world, so I decided to rename an existing opening instead. And which one could be a better fit than what I showed you above? Just look at it. It radiates Germanness. It has their very distinct charisma. It's screaming schadenfreude.

Germans are not the only ones who benefit from this rebranding. By giving this position a name , I am providing the entire chess comunity with a very important weapon: awareness. From now on, not only will you sigh when you see this position, but you will also mutter: "Those damned German players".

And now, my dear readers, I implore you: spread my words. Everyone must know about the discovery of the German Opening.

Wow, amazing read. Extremely progressive, this is a step in the right direction to improve chess as we know it.

If it makes you feel any better, the chess.com explorer has this line named after Germans:

1. b4 d5 2. Bb2 Qd6 (Polish Opening: German Defense)

Thank you Argonautidae, very nice :-)

At least we have the "Preussische Partie" and the Berlin Wall, of course :-)

This is the german blitz opening. You play it in blitz and preferably against French players. It doesnt take much time to do.

Thanks for your interesting contribution to the advancement of Teutonic chess. I would also like to share a German-related opening variation, championed many years ago by IM Hermann Fett: the Compiègne Wagon Gambit.

Although its main practitioner was the aforementioned Fett, this gambit was developed by French GM Ferdinand Moustachu, so it is actually not a pure-blooded German opening. A single inaccurate move can swing the game. It is not an opening for the fainthearted: the player who willingly enters it must be aware of its risks.
