Tactics in the Ruy Lopez

Sort:
MapleDanish

In your personal opinion... which of the Ruy variations is the most tactical (for black).  I've been playing the schliemann a lot lately and although I enjoy it I find that white can get an advantage with good play.

So... I want to switch... any good suggestions for playing against the ruy lopez?  Wild is best.

gambit theory

sorry I'm not sure I understand?

My suggestion for playing against the Ruy is to avoid the damn thing altogether. Play c5 or g6 according to choice. Unfortunately that means you can't play Traxler either...

i also dont know what is gambit theory

u know sharukin.. I almost agree with you.. the thing is I have SO much 'equity' if you will in the Traxler that I can't give it up now...

I wasn't being really serious. I have never knowingly played either side of a Ruy so I really can't say. I avoid it because of the huge amount of theory needed to play it well.

I used to play the Black side of the Ruy gladly except that most White players won't even go into it.  The Scotch or the Giuco Piano are boring games in my opinion so I switched to the Sicilian.  However, I spent a good bit of time playing the Marshall Gambit.  It's sharp and Black is almost guaranteed a draw at worst with accurate play.  White's play has to be as sharp as Blacks and the only good refutations take true nerve to play, often giving back a piece to relieve Black's pressure and trying to win with Queenside pawns.

Marshall gambit eh... I'll have to research it.

Thanks.

Also called the Marshall Attack.  I think that name is more common.

The Riga is very sharp

Most tactical take the E4 pawn~ Play the Ne7 or G6 var! Also was mentioned avoid it all together. Play the Philidor Counter, Latvian Gambits!

I was going to suggest the marshall gambit, but the trouble is, it's easy to avoid and then you're stuck with the black side of a closed lopez which it sounds like you dont want.  I also thought about suggesting the deferred schliemman, with a6 Ba4 f5.  I know nothing about it except i think it is supposed to be slightly more sound than 3...f5.  The riga favours white unless you're really good with endgames.  Not only that but if you play it against someone weak who doesnt know it, you will get a draw, which if they arent very good isnt what you want.  There's always the standard open lopez though.
