Keep in mind an important rule about pawns: pawns are usually stronger the closer they are to their home squares (and let's leave aside, for the moment, the issue of a passed pawn on the 7th rank). The practical implication of this is that a player throwing pawns at you is likely to create one or more weaknesses in his pawn front. Indeed, several standard defenses (most notably Alekhine's Defense, 1. e4 Nf6) encourage white to get a little too greedy with early pawn moves.

It's impossible to give you specific advice without seeing a game situation (perhaps you can post one?), but in general I'd suggest:

  1. Challenge his pawns with your own. For instance, in the French Defense (1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5), black challenges white's pawn-duo with the move d5, and very often by a later ...c5. Occasionally this will result in a locked-up pawn position, but this is not necessarily bad.
  2. Use your knights. Unlike most other pieces, the knights scoff at pawn walls, and are happy to jump over and create havoc behind them.
  3. When in doubt, exchange. A single mass of pawns bearing down on you can be intimidating; If you are able to make some trades, you may be able to break up this tidal wave and make it less of a threat.
