adit   b4  and a4 do nothing to gain more central space. Black has many ways to refute that gambit.

Black doesn't play b4 and a4 , what are you talking about ??

black has many ways to refute white's move of 2. b4

He means that for white it gains no space in the centre.

The Queen’s Gambit is so good that it isn’t even considered a gambit.

The Queen’s Gambit is so good that it isn’t even considered a gambit.

It is not considered a gambit because if white plays best, Black can cling to their extra pawn for about 9-10 moves, but is eventually forced to give it back. So since Black has to give it back, it's not a gambit.

That’s what I meant. Black will get an inferior position if s/he hangs on to the pawn for too long, while in other gambits that really isn’t an issue.

What about the other move, 1 e4 d5 2 g4?

It is in Eric Schiller’s huge tome, Unorthodox Chess Openings.

He means that for white it gains no space in the centre.

for black it gains no space in the centre by preventing their centre pushes like c5 and restricting pushes for space like b5 thereby affecting the centre

Why is the Vienna a surprise weapon? It is way better.

There are two Vienna Gambits. The Max Lange Vienna Gambit is the actual gambit, while the Falkbeer Vienna Gambit is actually the correct move order to reach the mainline.

why does everyone calls the latvian gambit a total garbage?

it's super fun and aggressive if you study the latvian can become a very powerful weapon against 700-1300 elo rockstars like u

To begin with, the Latvian Gambit used to be known as the Greco Counter Gambit, after Giacchino Greco (1600 - 1634). It was renamed the Latvian Gambit after Karl Behtins, of Latvia, demonstrated its playability in correspondence chess. I believe the correspondence match Riga - Stockholm, 1934, ended in three wins, two draws for Riga's chess players.

Personally, I play the Latvian sometimes. Play can be very sharp, and you have to be a very good tactician. You will find some players chickening out with moves like 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 f5 3 d3. The move 3 d4 can lead to the Philidor Counter Gambit after 3...d6! Indeed, the Latvian Gambit and PCG share many themes and variations.

If you think King’s Gambit is bad against beginners, you should play more KG against beginners.

I play the King's Gambit sometimes, and against strong players. It is very complex. My chess library has books on the King's Gambit.
