Open vs. Closed??? What does it mean for an opening to be open or closed?

Anyone know what the hell it means for a variation to be open or closed, like theres the catalan opening open defense and there is the catalan opening closed variation. there are alot of "closed" and "open variations" to certain openings? so can everyone try to explain to me what open and closed means, and the pros and cons of open variations and closed variations. Also, tell me about what kind of games an open variation will produce, and what kind of game a closed variation will produce?

I'm referring to all open and closed variations and systems.

Also, while we are at it, which do you personally prefer? an open or a closed system?

Name your favorite open or closed system in the thread.

And just for the fun of the forum, comment your favorite opening and your fave variation of that opening.

Have fun and keep it respectful, thanks for the help.

"open" and "closed" describe the situation on the board, specifically whether the center is occupied by pawns.

If the center is crammed with pawns, the position is "closed":  rooks can't get through, neither can at least two of the bishops, even knights may have trouble finding a path to the enemy.  Expect to see rather little movement of the major pieces until somebody finds a way to break the pawn chain.

Whereas, if there are no pawns in the center, the position is "open" and you can expect to see lots more action from the heavy artillery.

In the Catalan opening, the position after move 3 would have to be considered "closed" but it's really too early to tell what will happen.  You can imagine that white might lose the c4 pawn, leading to a more open position. That's exactly what happens in the Classical line a.k.a. "open Catalan".  It's not completely open at first since the d-file is still closed, but it's mostly open and it tends to stay that way.

The more options there are for many of the major peices to move, the closer it is to being open, I couldn't explain it better than the previous comment tho.
