Hey everyone,

Im looking on advice on how to learn openings, so my question is how do you to learn and retain your openings? Thanks in advance.

I find two openings as White and two openings as Blackto study or learn.  I look at the regular opening books first, such as MCO or a specialized book.  I run my databases to search for all games of a particular opening and then sort on them from shortest to longest game.  I then go over the openings by playing out the whole games.  I try to make a move before I see it in the game or opening books and see if it is a good move or not.  I then try to play these openings against other people or the computer.

Have a quick look at my blog, I've covered the basic opening and how it's helped me. Hope this can help. There are plenty of books out there too.

First, learning openings is probably what I'm worst at. I don't like doing it, and I simply don't retain varations in my memory. I also believe that at my level knowing a lot of variations isn't as important as other phases of the game.

That said, I have learned a lot about a couple openings because I've played the same basic openings for about the last 8 years or so. I have a few books on the openings  I play and I read them, but over and over again and variations just don't stick. So I play the same opening for a looong time and eventually I seem to know a lot about it. So I guess my way is just experience -- not the fastest way, that's for sure.
