Almost any variation of Sicilian.
Good Question
e5. i like solid defenses. if Nf3, Nc6. I'll play the main line ruy lopez, and basically main line everything
e5 after playing the CKD for awhile with mixed results, the Advance Var turned out to be a lot tougher than I thought it was. Now I play Petroffs Defense when possible and always accept the KG if offered. Eventually I'll try some RL defense (not the Berlin) or maybe play the FD for awhile, since I do have a clue in most of the main lines there.
Why do we not see the pro's using Alekhine's? Surely it hasn't been refuted!?
I also play the alekhine; no it's not refuted. It's not played (much) at high levels because 1)white has a slight edge (nothing dramatic) in several lines 2)(and i think more important) white can choose the game type. I mean, there are not many serious openings where white can play for an advantage both in razor-sharp and relatively dull lines. So neither the solid defender not the brave counterattacker GM will make 1...Nf6 his main defence. It's not so uncommon as a surprise weapon.
The last super-GM encounter in the alekhine (with a standard time control) is I think Topalov-Carlsen (2006? i can't remember) 0-1. Carlsen played the alekhine quite a lot in recent years, but mainly in blitz games.
What do you like to play against e4?
