Computer's Odd Scandinavian Defense

Sort:
FinnegansMate

I've been trying to beat a computer opponent (level 5 of 8) in a King's Pawn Game, and was wondering if there were any suggestions for where to go from here? The opening basically follows the Scandinavian Defense, but the final move 4. ... Qf5 doesn't show up in the Opening Explorer I'm using, and I can't seem to find a game that has this in it. I was thinking that this might indicate that it's a mistake, but the computer always ends up in a dominant position regardless of what I play. This could just be bad play on my part but regardless, what would be the best reaction to this 4. ... Qf5 be? I'm still sort of a beginner, so I apologize if this is a simple solution that I'm just not seeing. I'm just curious, and really want to beat this computer!

Well, developing your pieces and castling should help.

Why wouldn't you play 4.Be2?

FinnegansMate

Would 4. Be2 be a better move than 4. Ne2? I suppose I was thinking my next move would be 5. d4, which the e2 knight supports. I'm just wondering if there's a specific reaction to this queen move or if I should develop as normal.

Nakomaton

I would prefer 4.Be2.  With your queen on d1, the knight isn't really needed on e2.

4.Nge2 is still playable I believe.  If I were given this position, I would go with 5.g3 and 6.Bg2 to develop the light square bishop.

You don't need to do anything special. Just play natural moves and you will be sitting pretty.

try 4.Qe2 and exchange q's and c what happens--some engines play poor endgames.
