Best counter attack of Black to RUY LOPEZ opening

Sort:
CampScouter

I'm just wondering what is the best counter-attack to the Ruy Lopez opening, because this opening is so aggressive in the middle game.

Yigor

The best counterattack is Schliemann defense aka Jaenisch gambit 3...f5. blitz.png

I think the best answer lies in the book-Attacking The Spanish,by Mr. S.Brunello.This author suggests - The Schilemaan gambit,Marshall Attack, and the new Gajeweski Gambit.

You can always try the Open Ruy, where after 5. 0-0 it's ... Nxe4. I know Korchnoi played it and Ding Liren used to play it a lot.

Good luck learning 25 moves of theory for equality in the Karpov gambit.

White has the same problem too.  Of memorizing a lot of moves.

Often ...Be7 can sidestep any of those Ng5 tricks if Black wants. Of course, many of these lines are going to be tricky. But that's what you get when you want to counter attack a White Ruy.

Black is not forced to enter this variation...

CampScouter

Thanks again everyone! happy.png I found out that Schliemann is good for I tried it with my opponent on my last chess tournament in our school. Sadly, I finished it with a score of 2.5-2. It had 5 rounds.

marcsicina

@Pfren: what other Spanish lines do you recommend as being ambititious without a lot of draws?  Is the open one of them??

Hadron

Personally I like the Burn variation of Bird's Defence (Attack?), Alapin's 3...Bb4 and the Open

Muisuitglijder

Maybe the modern Steinitz? Has a gambit line much like the Schliemann. See video

But then again, white might decide to chop the knight off early after d6.
