Sure, anyone could have done it by then.

I'm surprised Tal didn't do it instead.

He didn't qualify.

To persecute for beliefs is absurd. Soon they will begin to remove those who do not swear allegiance to the United States. The same Ukrainian chess players support the authorities of their country, which holds torchlight processions in honor of the nationalist Bandera, whose wards killed civilians, including children during World War II. Why is no one suspending Ukrainian chess players?

British and Spaniards first, please. Longest rivalry of all times on atrocities.

The International Court of Justice has just ruled the following conclusion under the Genocide Convention: «The Russian Federation shall immediately suspend the military operations that it commenced on 24 February 2022 in the territory of Ukraine». STOP WAR. Peace. 🕊

Political beliefs shouldn't be a factor when dealing with something that has completely no relevance to politics. Chess should be free from it. If a grandmaster offered to coach me for free, I honestly wouldn't care whoever the heck he supports - he's good at what he does.

I don't support Karjakin's beliefs, but the guy above made a good point - will players in the future be required to swear allegiance to America, or pretty much whatever world power arises? Chess should be devoid of politics.

Personally, I absolutely agree with this statement.

Well it’s no surprise that some players in Russia with nationalistic ideals will support the recreation of the Soviet empire.

NATO, The Internation Court of Justice and the UN are both political entities, we shouldn't be factoring in politics.

The assumption of Nationalism equated with the mentally of an empire, prove such a generalisation where none such existed prior to this assumption that you aired for the world.

Alekhine, Fischer, Karjakin - what other grandmasters have been "cancelled" from chess events?

*Note that I oppose Karjakin's ban*

Just the name and the topic here make me think of Portland Oregon. It would be nice to see Portland ban karjackin. But they've legalized a lot of other things that were once illegal, so it's not surprising they look the other way when it comes to karjackings. Maybe it's part of the transportation diversity program, I don't know. Either way, it's an unfortunate name.

The invasion of Ukraine is supported by Russian Nationalists, who clearly would like Russia to be the centre of a large empire like it was during the Soviet Union. That mentality is there, just as some English people look back with fondness on the British Empire . These people also tend to be nationalists.

Ommony

Russia says FIDE should not dabble in politics, a myopia of sorts exists because it is Karjakin that has dabbled whereas FIDE's response may be interpreted as "keep politics out of Chess."

So American Nationalists don't believe in creating a larger empire but Russian Nationalists do. One man bad the other man good. You love pigeon holing everything.

Where is your proof that Russia sending troops into Ukraine counts as an invasion?

Dr_Doofen_shmirtz

I do not like this. Karjakin was expressing his opinion on something that has nothing to do with chess. I think banning him sets the dangerous precedent that FIDE can punish the political speech of well-known figures in the chess community.

It's a bit silly, but it's also been the way of the world for a good while now. The Olympics did more or less the same.

No, it hasn't been the way of the world, it is a recent trend. The Olympics do not have a history of mass banning people for political reasons.

I guess in employing the extreme measure of blanket bans. To me that just seems like a natural extrapolation of trends that have been intensifying throughout the last half a century. Sanctions, sanctions, sanctions...
