Pioneering Female Chess Champ Sues Netflix over "Queen's Gambit" Slight!!!

On the other hand, the title could be changed, by me, at any time, to literally anything.  Even a non-sequitur, like say, "What is your opinion about seagulls?"

How can that be?!?, you might say, nonplussed.

Dear Readers, it is because I, Barney, am the creator, the Original Poster, the Alpha, the Leader of the Pack!!!

Behold!  Even the imperious IPG acknowledges my infallibility, and sings praises to my command of the English vernacular!

Now, more coffee!!!

What I find so odd about the whole thing is that the scriptwriters chose to introduce this line in the first place. The line was not in the book, and there was absolutely no need or reason to identify the reigning women's world champion as Nona Gaprindashvili, to my recollection the only non-fictitional player mentioned in the entire series who's still alive. None of Beth Harmon's opponents were genuine players, all fictitional.

I heard it was because of Kasparov. Apparently they have a disagreement (or two). She didn't like what he said about a chess location, and he didn't like her misrepresenting what he said. It looks like this isn't the first time she has sought attention because of her thin skin.

Now that's gonna be a winner in the courtroom!

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, we only defamed the plaintiff in front of three hundred million people because one of the people on our team bears a grudge against her."

I don't know what the statute of limitation is, but that would mean Kasparov also gets to sue Nona for defamation.

It's just disappointing that someone as accomplished as Nona had to stoop to such a low level over something so insignificant, pointless, meaningless, and trivial. Maybe she is the original snowflake.

At any rate, I just heard she is suing because she doesn't like Kasparov and didn't like him calling her out on her exaggerations and misrepresentations. Maybe she has a different reason, I don't know.

It appears Netflix is suggesting a change of venue. It turns out the appropriate place for her grievances are to fill out a Hurt Feelings Report. Widely available online with a simple google search. She has to be thorough though, and not leave any spaces blank, otherwise it's rendered invalid and no action will be taken.

How lucky that corporations can laugh off their irresponsibility with a dismissive joke when they violate the law!

That would be lucky indeed. But, since no law was broken it's not a matter of luck. There is an appropriate course of action, and administration will take appropriate measures. Depending of course on the specific grievances she lists in the Hurt Feelings Report.

Part IV requires marking any of the necessary boxes for filing the report. Part V is the action that will be taken. It's possible more than one remedy will be enforced.

Breaking: TERMS OF GM NONA'S SETTLEMENT WITH NETFLIX REVEALED!

Netflix executives this morning announced the unveiling of it's latest offering to the world of chess related television:

"She Faced Men: The Nona Gaprindasvilli Story"

Starring:

Natalie Portman .... GM Nona

Demi Moore .... Lisa Lane

Anya Taylor Joy .... Jennifer Shahade

Mark Ruffalo .... Gary Kasparov

James Cromwell .... Old Bobby Fischer

Toby Maguire .... Middle Aged Bobby Fischer

George Clooney .... Jose Raul Capablanca

Danny Devito .... Mikhail Tal

Christian Bale .... Mikhail Botnovik

The rest of the cast is still being hashed out, but Netflix, never one to miss an opportunity, has bought the rights to GM Nona's story for a reported $25 million.  The case settled awhile ago under mysterious "undisclosed" circumstances, but the cat is out of the bag now.

The actors will be CGI enhanced as far as aging, etc. except for Mr. Bale who will gain or lose as much weight as needed for the part, and Mr. Maguire and Mr. Cromwell because the height difference is too great.

The story intends to follow GM Nona from her humble beginnings as a poor young chess prodigy to the pinnacle of her career, focusing on her numerous victories against men.  The producers have hinted that the series will get quite "meta" at the end, which will include the whole drama about the lawsuit, and even some of the spirited coverage of the story right here on chess.com by yours truly.

The one thing the producers lamented was that the costuming will not be nearly as elaborate as in "The Queen's Gambit",  because of "Soviet Russia's lack of a fashion industry".

Grandmaster Nona Gaprindashivli

Do you know, Nona Gaprindashivli was the fifth Women’s World Chess Champion and carried the title for 16 long years?

She was amongst the terrific chess masters who started playing when she was just 5. Nona Gaprindashivli was the first female to earn the prestigious title of Women Chess Grandmaster in 1978.
Many people don’t know that Nona Gaprindashivli sued the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit. The lawsuit was about an introduction about her in the last episode of the series that, “she has never faced men.”

Probably not. Considering the fact he did cheat. And admitted to it.

But you did hear it here first.  Look at the time stamps, my reports about this new lawsuit appear on chess.com a full hour before any others.  And chess.com has clearly been caught off guard, they have yet to formulate a coherent response, if any at all.  So you're welcome, from everyone's favorite Chess News Reporter –– hot on the trail of the latest Chess News scoop!

What Netflix owes her for sure is an apology in the form of a public statement in expllicit accurate language that corrects what was at the  least an irresponsible error or even maybe an unscrupulous intentional choice  based on selling the Series.

When life  serves lemons make lemonade. HERE IS AN IDEA:

Netflix  could simply hire Judith and Nana as consultants and great screen writers/actors and create a work of fiction with no historical errors that is -like QUEEN'S GAMBIT was  widely enjoyed by both chess players and non players alike. Good money there for all. Respect will prevail.

You are Welcome Netflix,

your fan, Dorianmode53

Wow , that’s so crazy. I didn’t even know that. The media will misinterpret stuff all the time.

I started playing tournament chess in the 1960s, and I remember world champion Nona Gaprindashvili, and as a lawyer myself, I am gratified that she has found justice.

I had not heard that. What justice did she find?
