Stumped by lesson

Howdy Y'all,

On the 5th lesson of "Champion Tactics with GM Wolff - In Between Moves" I do not see the necessity of movin the K to f1 and further after asking for the answer the original threat still is there.  If anything the Q can take at f7 and force mate What am I missing? I got a 0 as I don't understand either of the moves by black, but I did get the point about the K had to move to protect it's Q rather than capture the B.

Could you put a diagram in your post or a link to the original problem? It would help to see what you are talking about.

Hey Cowboy,

Black plays ...Bh2+, and now white has 3 responses, but two of them (Kxh2, Kh1) lose the Queen.  By playing Kf1, his King safeguards the queen.  Now Black comes back and plays the deadly ...Bg3, skewering the Queen and Rook.  White's threat of Qxf7 doesn't work, as Black recaptures with CHECK !!  (Rxf7+).  Therefore if white wants to keep his queen, he will lose the exchange (eg white moves his queen to safety, then black plays Bxe1)

Does this help??

Thanx jjeffrey,

I missed the check if white Qxf7 and Rxf7.  Hence a key reason to force the K to f1 (other than to catch an unwary player). Without the check white's R to e8 was goin to be mate for white.

An I just figured out the way to add a figure fer the next time I play dummy. Good suggestion brian42 (kid).
