Rating points

When Chess Mentor was brand new (it was only available on 3.5" floppy disk), I purchased it along with a couple expansion disks. I have always loved Chess Mentor and though I haven't used my original outdated software in years, I was very happy to find Chess Mentor here on Chess.com.

It is still a fabulous tool for improving one's play and has gotten even better as it's been developed further. I highly recommend it.

I do have one question, though, regarding the rating points. I am not concerned with whether my rating is "good" or "bad" since the idea is to improve my play, not simply chase points. However, I am curious as to whether there is any correlation/formula/etc. that can help me approximate my OTB rating based on my Chess Mentor performance.

I walked away from competitive play for almost a decade and I have just returned to rated OTB play. My current USCF rating is 1389. My Chess Mentor rating is above 2200. I know I have studied a lot and improved during my time away, but I also know that I am nowhere near USCF Expert level. Is there a way I can bridge the gap and give myself a ballpark estimate of where I stand these days? It will take years for me to grow my rating, assuming I have improved!

Anybody with insight, please share. Thanks!

EDIT:

***UPDATE*** Tonight (07/09) I dominated and won an OTB game vs. a 1708 USCF!

Well if you want to see how "strong" you really are, play Blitz (5-0) in a manner where you are paired with equally strong (or stronger opponents) ... I've heard that your slow-game/USCF rating tends to be about 200 points over your normal blitz ratings. Atleast that's been holding pretty true for me on the ICC. That should give you your strength estimate.

Well, thanks for the reply... But that does not address my question at all!

Seeing as it's the only response, however, I guess it is safe to assume that the "magic conversion formula" that I seek just doesn't exist. Aw well.

Great OTB win Rob!  Congratulations.

I'm approx 1350 but my Mentor rating is over 2300 lol.  So in answer to your question, I guess there is no correlation.

But I'm the same as you.  I use Mentor to improve my chess knowledge not to get excited about an online rating.

I agree completely.  My otb rating is 1150 but my chess mentor rating is a ridiculous 2650!!  i just use it to improve my positional play and pay no attention to the rating.

While Chess Mentor is a fabulous learning tool, the rating system they use is laughably inflated and unrealistic, so do not use it as a basis for comparison with your USCF OTB rating.  It's inflated presumably to boost your confidence.  If it were realistic, I'd be an IM! lol
