You should ask for a monthly allowance.  ;)

I think it strange that folk find it pricey. I'm a poor man, no fancy bells or whistles on my clothes, however, folk probably spend the same amount of money on nothing. Now taxi's, there is a rip off, oh and take away food, oh, and trainers and bottled water, and ice. Who buys ice?

Oh, and I also saw someone say that they couldn't afford it because they were only 16 and a child. I was working fulltime in a factory at 16, and many of my mates also had fulltime jobs, labouring, glass collecting, etc. Although, this makes me sound like my grandad so I'll pipe down. Wheres my pipe and slippers.

Seriously does everybody want to have a group hug with the site founders?  Geez... don't blindly support them.  Although I'm sure they think its a great product, they are selling it, so they have at least a little bias.

Me?  I think I might buy a monthly subscription if i am going to have a month with lots of free time.  Thats probably more economical then the yearly.  Seriously, i don't see much point to the yearly...

Anyways, while I think its better then a chess book, a product you may want to consider are chess programs with trainers built right in (chessmaster anyone?). Those are viable competitors, also with GM content, and you can get a great chess computer at the same time.

You may also want to consider a differant product altogether like endgame analysis programs or opening databases (shredder).

I really don't know which solution is best however.  Just not chess books.

I've been looking at Chess-Mentor and have subsequently found and joined this site.  However I personally can't afford to purchase the tutorials.

My personal opinion is that it is too expensive.  I do understand the argument that $X per month may not cover the cost of the tutorials.  However this pricing model conception is a little flawed as identification of the market sweet spot is far more significant in these matters.  Merging the site subscription further with the Chess Mentor subscription, and playing on the integration would encourage more people to a) subscribe and b) come to this site.

Further to this it should always be remembered that once break even is reached there is always profit - other than bandwidth costs, there is no difference if you get twice the subscribers by setting the price at 50%.  However I would take a fair guess that you would actually get 3-4 times the amount of subscribers as many would consider it an excellent deal, thus netting you further profit.

This is just my opinion, but I think it is valid - especially when you have a thread this long about the pricing of this product.  Forget about the price of the original discs, this is Web 2.0, there is far more potential in delivering an integrated solution, especially when the 'free' part is as good a product as you have already.

except that it doesn't look as nice, doesn't give you performance stats, and never gets new material and courses.

If you do an online search for the cd version of Chess Mentor you will find that the deluxe version goes for $180 (usd).  Right now Chess.com is offering the complete course for less with more lessons being added.  I do not think the staff at chess.com is putting an unreasonable price on it.  As consumers we have to decide where we chose to spend our money.

That's great to hear.  Especially since I just bought Chess Mentor 3 Deluxe and have had it for 2 days and am already 1/4 of the way thru the problems.
