Chess Mentor FEN or PGN

Hello all;

    So while using chess mentor; is there a way to copy an FEN String or PGN File. I understand the need to keep the mentor data proprietary; however, this would be exceedingly usefull to player. Particalarily, there are many scenarios which I would like to talk about in discussion forum because I feel there might be a better solution than the one proposed; ofcourse, I am sure that in most cases; I am just missing something. In those circumstances; I would like to know what I am missing and why the suggested sequance is better!

Thanks,

T

I think your best bet is to create the same board position using something like Winboard and then saving that to a PGN.

Or even more conveniently, use the Analysis Board link in the resources tab on the above menu.

I also frequently feel the need to take the FEN of the current position and paste into an engine for analysis.

I don't think that exposing the FEN of the current position makes it any easier for 3-parties to copy the course. This is one of those cases where extra security only punishes the honest users.

Also sometimes when I go back and review in detail the notes for each move, it helps to have a virtual board setup so that I can follow the sequences of moves being discussed.

bcalmac, note that in chess mentor, the author's explanations are usually worth much more than the evaluations of a chess engine, especially when it is a about strategical plans. Trying to use an engine for looking at chess mentor positions would most often just tend to distract you from the real learning process of looking at the position with human eyes, guided by human explanations.

I am aware of that and I agree with you. But I wouldn't use the engine as a replacement for for the author's comments.

Sometimes it just seems to me that some alternate move is pretty awesome and there is no explanation why it's wrong. A chess engine would point out the tactics instantly.

Another example is when you'd want to play some strategically won position against an engine.

FEN is good ...

Here's a practical use case where the lack of FEN export or analysis board with the current position becomes a usability problem for ChessMentor.

The most recent lesson I went through ends with something like this: White now has a large advantage. The rest of the game is well worth looking at: 9...Ree8 10.Qc7 Rc8 11.Qa7 g5 12.Qxa6 Rc2 13.R4d2 Rec8 14.Be4! Rc1 (Black noticed that 14...Rxd2 loses to 15.Qxc8+.) 15.Qxd6 Qg7 16.Qd8+! Rxd8 17.Rxd8+ Qf8 18.Rxf8+ Kxf8 19.Rxc1 and Black gave up.

Since I can't yet visualize 20 moves ahead, I need some kind of board to follow the rest of the game, but how? The ChessMentor UI does not help (no FEN export and no analysis board with the current position). All I can do is bring up a board and manually set up the position. Not fun.

Minimally, can we at least have an analysis board with the current position? What is the point of always displaying the start position in the anlysis board?
