Any good?

Hi everyone,

I downloaded and tried the Chess Mentor software, and the samples it gave were way too easy and geared for beginners. My question is: Does Chess Mentor help you improve your chess?  Is it just a tutorial format? Or can it analyze your own games and tell you (in English) why a certain line of play is good/bad, even strategically?

Right now, I'm relying on analyzing my games with Fritz, but Fritz cannot say why this/that move is better. It just gives an evaluation number.  Is there ANY chess software out there where I can go over my game and it can tell me why a move is bad or good in English?  The "explain moves" feature in Fritz is pretty lame.

Thanks.

Chess Mentor Online (www.chess.com/chessmentor) WILL help your chess at almost any level (unless you are above 2200 FIDE). The demo doesn't really show you what it can do! Try one month as a subscriber. If you don't like it, there is a 30-day money-back guarantee. You have nothing to lose.

As for game analysis, what it sounds like you need is a personal coach to annotate your games. Check out www.chess.com/coaches to see a list of coaches and their services.

Enjoy!

Chess Mentor is great. yes it is in English. and it also it gives you instant feedback on every possible move you can make. sometimes it gets a little frustrating but that's how you learn!

Yes, it's great.

Is it just a tutorial format?

No, it's interactive, you try to find the moves, and it'll annotate the position into its details, moreover, it tells you why the move you suggested was good or bad.

can it analyze your own games and tell you (in English) why a certain line of play is good/bad, even strategically?

No.
