Chess as Lifelong passion and be winner in life

At the moment I am very much enjoying this 'Daily chess course' by email with Chien (fhunfi). For me it is mentally challenging, and very helpful. So, it is a nice alternative to weekly lessons.

I have had many chess lessons in past with Chien, and they have all been so useful and helpful, as well as Chien's insights on my chess games by email.

And now, since the previous 2 or 3 months, I have been focusing on "Daily Course by email" by Chien. It consists of daily emails with Chien. It involves a test position from a chess position (often from a master/grandmaster chess game or own chess game). And we progress from there, thinking what the best move is, it can be quite challenging, and very interesting... emailing back & forth, and Chien giving hints if necessary, until I answer it correctly. And then when one test is thoroughly complete, we move onto the next test position.

In general, one will just need 10 mins or max. 15 minutes daily for answering / thinking of solution. However, for me, sometimes I get so interested in a chess position, that I have spent up to 30 minutes each day, as these are interesting chess positions to think about.

These chess tests can cover all aspects, from opening/ mid/ endgame. It can be from your own game, or a master chess game, etc. mainly discussing strategic aspects of the game, and also linked with any tactical aspect of it.

So... yes, for continual daily chess improving, I think that this Daily chess course (by email) is so helpful! and also, if you have any problems with financial budget, Chien is always negotiable & flexible for a serious chess improver.

What a nonsense!!

Chess has nothing to do with life and life with chess!

Yes, it has something to do with life. Chess teaches you two very important things that you need to succeed in life. 1. Patience 2. Your every action has a consequence on your life and you are the only one to blame for it.

2. Your every action has a consequence on your life and you are the only one to blame for it.

The 'only one' part in the above is clearly not true. In life people don't start from the same position and other people's actions have significant consequences for you. Social mobility is poor and getting worse right across the world.

fhunfi has given me tips and insights about the game and where I can improve. He is humble and knowledgeable. Thanks for putting together the 90/30 tournament. I am glad to know there is still a love for long time control although I feel it is dwindling.

I agree. I like the fact that he does not draw attention to himself by telling everyone how good he is but rather helps people and illustrates his competence. This combination is rare.

Chein has trained me in the anti sicilians in preparation for rolling out my dragon as black, he is very knowledgeable in various openings and plays strong theoretical lines to test your systems effectively. He is very reasonably priced too. My chess development has gone through the roof after our sessions of training games. highly recommended.

Also some interesting books have been written on this subject: How Life Imitates Chess: Making the Right Moves, from the Board to the Boardroom by GM Garry Kasparov, and The Moves That Matter by GM Jonathan Rowson.

Happy New Year to you too, Chien. Thanks for all you do.

fhunfi does the best training for club players out there. none of this -here are 40 puzzles a week to try like some trainers, no he spends time to learn attacks and defences in various openings based around certain themes or plans which you can spend your own time preparing for. Motivation to learn themed openings creates a lot of expert skill and he is a strong enough player to test all openings. I am a legit student of his and i heartily recomend you try him out.

I had the pleasure to play against him in a longer time control match (90 + 30). I was lucky to be have been well prepared in the opening. While he did not know the theory that far, he nevertheless played the first 14 moves - a lot of them difficult to find - following the recommendation of a top-ten grandmaster... In a sharp position he finally deviated on move 15 and I could win perhaps one of the best games I ever played with an accuracity of 99,1%. After the game we talked in a very friendly and warm atmosphere about it and he showed great understanding of openings and middlegames too. If I was a somewhat weaker player, I wouldn't hesistate to book a lesson for training here.

I have known fhunfi online for a couple of years and been a student of his for the past couple of months. I had a feeling for a long time that he might be a good fit for me as my coach but only decided recently to approach him. I liked that he never tried to push a sale onto me and waited until I approached him and asked for lessons.

I do a one hour live session with him each week and also do an email based course where typically he gives me a position and asks me to think about the plans and the best moves. When I can't see the correct answers he emails me back with a hint, or if I find the correct answer he will proceed to the next question on the position.

From the daily course I am mostly learning a mix of middlegame tactics and positional understanding. In some cases this also relates to specific openings but usually it is applicable to a wide variety of different openings.

For the live sessions, we have mostly focused on endgames. We have gone over some model games by player such as Capablanca, Alekhine, Kasparov and Short. I have seen full games, the relationship between the opening play and the endgame that is eventually reached, and how those tiny advantages result in a won game.

In many endgame examples the solution requires putting the opponent into zugzwang. For the first month or so we mostly looked at examples of how to convert a position when a pawn up, or when having an outside passed pawn. Recently we did an example of winning an endgame entirely due to a slightly better king position.

On my request, instead of a 4th live session each month we instead play a practice game. Although I ended up losing every game, each game taught me something about the game of chess and also about myself and the way I play it. After each game, he analyses it for me and sends me his analysis.

Overall, I can say that he has been diligent, reliable, and continues to help me a lot.

If you are looking for a coach, he could be the right choice for you too.

On average, how much are lessons and how many does the average beginner take?

Yes it's available & recommended.

My fee is US$ 15 / hour. for weekly live session by skype audio video.

I usually start everything by sending email consist of 10 Test by PDF file (mostly about endgame, but also some midgame & opening scene).

From your answer (that you will reply by email later), also browsing some of your games,

I can know several things:

- where your level at moment
- what field that I can help you
- where / how I can start with etc.

This consultation / test answer & checking is free.

There is no obligation that you need to take lesson, after you did the Test.

* For some who cannot afford US$ 15 / hour on weekly basis live-session by skype,

there is other alternative, called "Daily Course by email" (where the fee is US$ 25 monthly)

- It is an email-based course, on daily bases, where typically I will give you a position (or discussing a whole game move by move / scene by scene) and asks you to think about the plans and the best moves. When you can't see the correct answers, I will email you back with a hint, or if I find the correct answer then I will proceed to the next question on the position.

From the daily course you will be mostly learning a mix of middlegame tactics and positional understanding. In some cases this also relates to specific openings but usually it is applicable to a wide variety of different openings.

To finish discussing 1 Test, often it need to take 4 - 5 email reply back and forth / question & answers from 1 scene to next. as we are discussing your answer.

And instead of giving all solution at once, I will always give small hint each time if needed ... with purpose that you will find answer finally by yourself aka using "Socrates method" - I will stimulate your thought process so that you will find the final answer by yourself at the end.

After Test-1 finished, then I will send you next test, and so on.

You will just need 5 - 10 min / max 15 minutes daily for answering / thinking of solution.

Everyday is small steps of improving.

For more detail about it, pls reach me by chess com private message.

Swiss 90m+30s kicked off. Round-1 just began.

Thanks, all.

Have fun! If you don't have fun with what you are doing, then you might do it wrongly.

If you made a New Year's resolution to play more "serious" chess games at "slow" time controls, you are the right community. Our small community of classical-time-control game is very solid and we will grow together by motto "learn / practice / and repeat".

Hello all from New York City. I've been friends with fhunfi for many years. He is a true lover of the game and plays at a high level. He's also an outstanding instructor. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their chess.

I had to come back and post about how tirelessly this man runs tournaments for people to play in.

I see his announcements all the time for numerous tournaments he runs to ensure members have opportunities to play longer time controls. It is very apparent that he loves the game of chess and wants to pass that love on to others.
