I Enjoyed Playing & Analyzing Games With Chien (Fhunfi), It Was Very Fun And Very Instructive.

I am Very Thankful To Him For Improving Me As A Chess Player And I Wish Him The Best.

This Was Very Helpful To Me And I Learnt A Lot From The Mistakes I Did, He Showed Me In Depth Everything I Did Wrong And What I Should Have Instead.

If You Have Not Had A Lesson With Him, I Highly Recommend It.

I am still interested in practicing a few slow unrated games in prep for the 90 30 tourney. That is assuming I have played enough games to be allowed to play.

I've been playing in the 90 30 tournaments for several months now and really enjoy it, especially the feature that each round's games are not played simultaneously, but at a time both players can agree on in a two-week The extra flexibility is nice, and the tournaments are well-run.

If you want to improve fhunfi is a great teacher. He helps you focus your thought process on critical moves and long term strategy. He goes beyond identifying good and bad moves by explaining why they were good or bad. Well worth becoming a student if you are a serious player.

I enjoy every practice game with Chien. His postgame analysis is very helpful. I benefit a lot from it.

Everyone who likes to prepare for the next tournament and loves playing an unrated game against a friend (maximum rating 1600) is very welcome to contact me. I think both sides can profit from it because there is not so much pressure in contrast to playing rated games. Nevertheless it is a good preparation for the tournament or any rated games.

Thanks for all your reviews. I appreciate it a bunch.

Let me share a bit of my chess-life-story.

I never had a single day thinking of quitting chess since I know chess in my childhood (10 years old) until I am 53 years old today.

I don't play any other games in my computer, nor have any other game or hobby that can attract me as much as chess.

Some players, even some stronger players than me, fail to maintain the passion of it, especially in their slump chess period.

The best that I want to share is: try to think less about chess titles, rating, and accolades. Regardless of your age and experience, set small, incremental goals and play the game as a hobby or passion project. eg: small project of study a new opening that you like, find an idol to follow of that opening you choose, think of it as a big long project of trial and error, keep trying again, error, re-learning & repeat again - to understand it better & better.

Imagine someone who set a goal of reaching 1800 in one year, and then quit playing after falling just short. Comparing with a very different attitude: immersing yourself in the joy and passion of the process of learning and improving, secure in the knowledge that the results would come on their own over time. This way, chess will be our long-life passion.

A pity if we only view chess-rating as if we pursue University degree within 4 years let say - it is a parameter, yes, but it's not everything. If we did what I wrote above (immersing ourselves in the joy and passion of the process of learning and improving etc), interestingly chess will return the favor - it will be our long-life passion.

Some bitter & sweet experience during competitive play of course, but that is real life all about as well, isn't it? None that went always smooth.

Every new game regardless the result is new learning experience, either applying what we have known/ learnt or encountering a completely new situation that will be new lesson-learnt. Winning is a bonus but not everything. Applying the joy of analyzing your own game correctly using effective methods, Then repeat and repeat again.

Kindly Regards,

Chien

Chien is the most enthusiastic instructor ever! Besides a weekly online training session , he gives homework, goes over with you, and reviews your tournament games with you, giving excellent analysis and advice. It’s hard to improve without someone else going over your games with you.

I had been away from chess from age 18, to age 61. When I started back, I was losing to, well, a lot of people that I wouldn’t have in the old days. Chien started me out with endgames. I had never studied endgames. I learned from Chien how to recognize moves in the opening, and middle game that will affect your endgame. What a difference. If you’ve never studied endgames, guaranteed you’ll go up 250 points with Chien.

I've been taking lessons from fhunfi (chien) for years. I've enjoyed learning new openings and defenses and how to counter them. He's been very accommodating in scheduling lessons with me and I've learned a lot from his analysis of my games. It has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of the game.

Where can we see the 90m+30s online club. I used to be a classical time control player only. Things have changed so I got to learn bullet and blitz. In our province rated games were very rare. That is why I do not have otb rating. You needed to travel to be a rated player.

I have been playing in @fhunfi's tournaments for a while now, I play a few, then take a break and come back. He has also played in mine occasionally.

I must say, his tournaments are always well run, and he is always making sure they are run fairly.

He and I have traded ideas on running tournaments and he is always great to communicate with.

If you have not played in one of his tournaments I suggest you give it a try.

Not really sure about his teaching stuff, but this guy does great job organizing chess tournaments

Sample game analysis:

- Caro Kann pawn structure

- handling backward pawn

- K at center is better than ..0-0 in endgame

- Conversion in pawn endgame / pseudo pawn sac / strength of outside passed pawn

Chien(fhunfi) is a great organizer and I strongly encourage you to play in one of his tournaments. He is highly dedicated to organizing and I have never seen anyone like him.

SoupSailor72

Great game and analysis.

Chien (fhunfi) knows openings, middle game strategy, and end games. I know, because he has beaten me in all phases of the game -- but I learn from playing him, because he is always helpful in post mortems. Not only is he a gracious player, he is a great teacher. He is also great at organizing tournaments. Whether taking lessens from him or playing him, it is a privilege to know him.
