check your opponent's rating before you play. if their peak rating is close to what you're playing at, you have a reasonable chance of winning. if their peak rating is like 2200 you're probably going to get crushed.
1600 to 1800 - how to pull it off?
Alright... have been through the same problems and this is what I found out.
I worked 3 or 4 times with a coach, really good one and it helped me. Not immediately but in the long run.
From my observation getting to 1800 was the easiest outta all 100s. Hardest was 1700 and staying there especially. Now I'm trying slowly to 2000 while I can keep my rating around 1900.
At your rating players still blunder a lot. 1 or obvious 2 move losing mistakes are common. You gotta focus and really try to see the sense behind every move.
Doing puzzles helps a lot in pattern recognition and seeing all this faster. You should do puzzle rush and regular puzzles as well. Lichess btw has much better puzzles than chess.com
You need to look for active moves aka respond to threats with your threats. It's easy sort of but it's hard to make it your second nature. Three first moment I tried to employ this mindset I instantly lost 150 points. Good habits take time to develop, but there is no other way than just trying all over.
Analyze every game you lose. Game review on chess.com is amazing for that. Unlike puzzles much much better than lichess. You should know why you lost and why didn't you win - helps a lot.
If something helped me from videos it was Naroditsky speedrun videos on YouTube. They're absolutely amazing, go watch them!
GL!
1700 to 1800 = 2/3 games beats 1700.
If you played against yourself when you posted this 2 months ago then you would beat yourself about 3/4 times.
So what did you learn in two months to be so much better???
To get from 1600 to 1800 u need to gain 200 rating points. I hope this helps u a little bit, good luck.
1600 to 1750 is like comparing a college and pro pitcher in baseball. 1800-1850 more of the same. 1900 is an even greater hurdle. You have to be good at everything…
tactics, strategy, endgames, middle game strategy for the openings you play and consistency and the like.
Hello, I made a video about this very topic recently, after looking at hundreds of games between 1500 and 1800 ELO! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZOQVAM4uGQ
I hope it helps! There are several areas, but one of my main conclusions was consistency. Also deeper strategic/middlegame work seems to be required.
All the best,
Can
Well done!
A coach once told me establishing a rating vs peaking are two different things.
