My ’70s Soviet Penguin set

I bought a cute magnetic Soviet chess set!

It’s a ’70s Ukrainian set from Dnepropetrovsk. I call these sets “Penguin sets”, as the knights are reminiscent of penguins to me with that division between the back and front. Yes, I realize that’s supposed to be the manes, but it doesn’t read that way.

I’m planning on painting the backs of the white knights black to reinforce that penguin idea (and I will paint the middle ring of the bases black as well). For the black pieces, I will do the opposite (creating reverse penguins I guess). 🤭

Or I might paint the bellies of the black knights white to make them proper penguins as well—assuming the way the bases are painted will differentiate the black and white knights enough. We will see.

PS: I found 20 of these sets on Etsy. So if you would like to get one for yourself, let me know, and I will direct you to them.

I have no idea why so much white space was inserted between the paragraphs; I’m unable to fix it for some reason.

The knights are simple and straightforward, with an elegant aesthetic. I find the idea of painting them to give them a penguin look quite interesting. Please share the results when you are done. Thanks for posting!

If it’s a success, I will!
