Fischer Series Plastic Set

Sort:

Lately I have been very interested in plastic sets.

I found this plastic 3.75" king set called Fischer Series. It's offered on many sites (HOS, US Chess and more). Does anyone know where it originates or who makes it? It's offered in some colours but trying to find if the manufacturer offers it in more colours.

Otherwise, if you own it how do you like them?

I think I corrected it now. happy.png

These are indeed available at most resellers, I bought mine at Niggemann (Germany). They come in an unmarked container so I have no idea about the manufacturer. I can say that, for the price, this is a great set for day to day play.

Note that the bases on it are quite broad so I use them on a 58mm board (for rapid & blitz I prefer smaller board sizes so I don't use these pieces for that)

This set is sold by many distributors with different names such as Conqueror or traditional Staunton. for five bucks more I prefer the HOS Reykjavik plastics pieces. I've had mine nearly a decade and a half, I have more expensive and better plastic sets but this is my favorite to bring to the coffee shop and Saturday tournaments. Below is pic of my old set and here is a link to the HOS Reykjavik plastic pieces

@biglew @brownishgerbil Thank you.

I like the color combination. I will likely buy the set but still want to know more about who makes them.

These plastic sets are mostly made in India or China. You should look there if you are looking for sellers of such sets.

I did find the supplier [of generic chess sets sold by many resellers] on Alibaba happy.png

I own and have gifted this set a couple of times. It's a step up on quality and design from the basic plastic chess piecee. The ones I gifted were the white and blue which the kids really liked. Like all plastic pieces (except for the Ultimate sets) the weights and felts will fallout but I just reglue and refelted them for my nephews.

Which Ultimate set are you referring to?

natteh

Probably the "Bobby Fischer Ultimate Chess Pieces", like these:

I have this set, and quite like it. The pieces are very large and heavy, but pair really well with the big 'mousepad' board that Chess House sells, and they feel quite bulletproof. I worry more about my kids damaging my furniture with these pieces, than doing any harm to the pieces themselves!

Second that, most definitely!!

These are my V3 Ultimates paired on a 2.375 inch square vinyl board & then on a 2.25 inch square mousepad board. I really love their stable, wide bases--no knocked over pieces and weights are designed to keep from loosening/rattling. You will enjoy these...

I like the proportions. Thank you.

The appliance white Ultimate Chess Set. They are durable. My chess club has had them for about a year and let me tell you the kids used and abused them but I haven't seen one piece chipped or missing a weight. There are quite a few with missing felts but that's about it.

I did a quick search on the Bobby Fischer Ultimate set, it appears to have been created about 1987 (?) and became iconic in US clubs and tournaments because of it's cream color and handling. The original company went out of business and molds destroyed. By 2018, @ShelbyLohrman from American Chess Equipment introduced a V2. It's now on V3 with an improved weight system that injects the plastic around the weights to prevent them from becoming loose.

The design is a plastic reproduction of the set used in the 1972 Fischer-Spassky matches. It is very similar to a 1960 Jaques of London with bulbous bishop head that makes it easy to grip.

Definitely a set I'm going to purchase as well, thank you everyone.

I have the Fischer Series pieces, and I love them. I like that they are heavy, stable, and large. Their low center of gravity combined with the bevel on the bottom makes them quite stable. To make the Queen tip over, you have to tip it a full 62 degrees from the horizontal, measured between the base and the board. The Pawn is least stable, still requiring a tipping angle of 57 degrees to topple it. Basically, all of the pieces are stable to about 60 +/- 3 degrees, which I think is more than most sets, and quite consistent between each type of piece. The bases are on the large size. On my 20 inch mousepad mat, the King's base takes up 82% of the 55mm square size. (To be within 80%, the square would have to measure 56.5mm.) The Pawn's base takes up 58% of the square. To me, they have a nice heft and feel to them.

My wife has this set. It’s one of the heaviest plastic sets I know, and to my surprise (given the price) it lacks mold lines! I’ve heard some people complain of the weights coming loose and rattling inside, but that hasn't happened to my wife's set yet. And for the low cost, it seems an easy enough replacement if it does happen.
