You may need to use a program that can read all file extensions. Something similar to Infanview.
Does anyone know where Chessmaster: Grandmaster Edition stores its chess set models?
They are in the DAT files folder, which might be something like:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition\Data\Dat
But to access them you will need the DatTexExtract tool. There is a link to it in Wayback:
Then you can extract the files, but only as TGA files so you will need something that can open those. I think Blender can do it.

Unofrtunately, it looks like that tool only extracts the textures for the chess sets and not the piece models.
So I have an interesting project planned. I'm planning on making a custom chess set based on the "Staunton metal" chess set from Chessmaster: Grandmaster Edition, seen below:I'm planning on 3d printing it - but there's one major hitch. I cannot for the life of me find where the piece models are stored. I've turned the files upside down in my search for them, but all my efforts have been fruitless.
If anyone could find where the piece models are stored and what file type they are in, that would be appreciated.
