How big are they? Do they unscrew? That Knight looks like it is probably composed of 3 parts.

Yes several parts do unscrew - some I think are threaded but tight.

Yeah good point. But although this style pre-dates Staunton's design, does it mean the set is older than 1849 - or did they continue to make these afterwards?

@Jas-Scotland - can you determine if it's bone or ivory? I know you mentioned the test you did, but some people can tell by looking through a magnifying glass - there's some youtub videos on it, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62PKdovwlNs

I'd guess yours is ivory.
