Does anyone collect antique or rare chess books?

Another category of old books that I consider worth owning are the chess materials that were used by the great players themselves. For example:

This is why I treasure the older books that my chess coach used to improve with.

I'm not into first editions unless they're very reasonably priced, but I like having lots of older books in descriptive notation or languages that I can read or figure out. I also have many/most of the McFarland, Caissa, and Edition Olms books of the players and tournaments I'm interested in.  Probably have about 400-500 books all told.  But for most books, I'm happy with a reissue vs. a pricey first edition.  The one first edition that I'd be tempted to buy but know I would not be able to afford and find in good condition is one of the numbered copies of the Sixth American Chess Congress 1889, edited by Steinitz.  I saw it in pristine condition in a Chicago Library and I really wanted it.  So I console myself with the very small, hard to read Edition Olms reissue.

My problem is that I have too many books which I need for my research on human evolution and history of evolutionary ideas. I simply don't have much space at home. I would like to sell part of my collection, also boards, sets and clocks.  It doesn't make sense to have things which can't be displayed.

My stuff is not for investment or display. I'm just a crazy person.  I like having and looking through old tournament books and playing through selected games.  I also love looking at cross tables and reading the random remarks about the players and the venue.  I also have  an enormous set of more job specific books.  I have reasonable storage, but it is still finite, so my better half is constantly nagging me about cleaning up and getting rid of the "junk."

If any chess books were priced as expensive antiques, then they would likely never be opened anymore. They would only be displayed behind a glass case or get lost in a billionaire’s library. A perfect example would be Bobby Fischer’s personal copy of Anatoly Karpov’s “Selected Games 1969-1977” which happened to be signed by Karpov for Fischer.

Should chess books like the first editions of “My System” ever become  collectible, players today would likely buy two copies of new publications - one to read and study with and one to seal and preserve to resell later just like comic books.

I’ve only read of one copy of My 60 Memorable Games that was actually signed by Bobby Fischer for a request. It once offered for $3,000 on eBay. It briefly went up to $10,000 when Fischer was released from Japan then the listing was eventually removed.

Here is another copy that happened to be the advanced copy and it was signed by both Fischer and Evans. $9,500.

Here is Lombardy’s signed copy being sold on eBay Canada for $49,500.

Hello chess friends.... Question for you all. Found a very nice copy of Camil Seneca's Le Championnat du Monde Des Echecs 1948 à la portée de tous.  Softcover, excellent condition. I looked far and wide and could find nothing about this book. It's in French, of course, but still nothing came up on the Google machine ... I'll keep looking but this thread seems pretty on the case.  Many thanks.

I am not a collector, even so I have some old ones:

Ansur, Alfredo (1926). O Jogo Real. Lisboa: Parceria António Maria Pereira.

Harding, T. (1979). The Games of the World Correspondence Chess Championships I-VII. London: Batsford.

Helms, Hermann, & Alekhine, Alexander (1925). The book of the New York international chess tournament, 1924.

Ioudovitch, M., & Kotov, Alexander (1959). L’école d’échecs Sovietique. Moscou: Editions en Langues Etrangeres.

Trifunovitch, Petar (1973). Fischer-Spassky: Pelo Ceptro do Xadrez. Lisboa.

Recently I bought this book, I think it is quite rare, about the games of the famous Philipp Stamma . Actually there are 3 books bound together.

I agree - the internet in the best bet to find old/rare chess books.

re: The Bilguer. I own the complete set with several duplicates including a 6th edition previously owned (with notes throughout) by one of its contributors. The Bilguer “Handbuch” series is the Heart of my chess book collection.

Yes, but I know only one out of say a hundred members of three chess clubs collecting old chess books ( e.g. the Bilguer ).

Most old books are expensive... but still available, in case you yourself are interested, see www.schaakboek.nl for antique, old and reprints.

I know of two libraries, one general and one in a chess club, that stopped with chess books, everybody finds everything on the internet.

By the way, buying and having more chess sets is ( in my opinion ) quite something else and has nothing to do with playing chess.

What is the reason of your asking ? Can we exchange more info, if so, let us know your interests !

I have a couple of rare books in my collection

I have an original copy of alekhines best games. Not sure of the details, but its pretty old and just cool to have something that 'authentic'.

Ziryab

I don’t deliberately pursue old books, but I have several that are relatively rare.
