@Rsava - sorry to hear you were having problems with the piece recognition on the Air. Did you try the sensor bare (not inside the piece) with just felt under it? What type of felt did you use? Trying to do a little pre-troubleshooting before I put together my 3d print Dubrovniks for an Air+.

I did not try it because they all worked on the Evo as I was making them.

Just tried it with the extra sensors I have with a piece of felt attached

The same squares that I had issues with (the six squares f1>>f3>>h3>>h1>>f1 inclusive) register some of the sensors, others they register them for a second then blink off, some blink off and on. Obviously those squares do not like the thicker felt. Other squares (e.g. d4, c6, e3) work fine. And all the squares work fine with the original pieces.

Oh, well. The new pieces work for me on the Evo board so all is good.

Did you check it with the chessnut app ? because that's what there had recommend to do. check that the chips are working . Mind you that was a year ago now .

Does the variation in sensitivity seem to be more from sensor to sensor, or more from square to square?

KingMoored

It's possible Chessnut assembles their chess pieces in a constant humidity and temperature controlled environment.

On the Chessnut Q&A page, they talk about chess pieces may sometimes become slightly unstable and/or wobble as a result of a bulge on the bottom of the chess pieces.

This is a result of expansion and contraction of the chess pieces from changes in temperature and humidity and they suggest you press the bottom of the piece with your fingertips to eliminate the bulge. I live in the Northeast US and I do this almost daily on one or two of my Air+ wooden chess pieces.

Yes, I always test my modifications with the native app to ensure I am using what they produced to make sure it is not the software.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

When I was making the pieces, I noticed that there is some variation in the sensitivity of the individual squares. I've noted elsewhere that this cannot really be considered a bug given that the board only needs to work with the official Chessnut pieces. Curiously, between my PRO and Air boards, the PRO had a few squares that were less sensitive than the Air, but the 1.4 mm felt worked fine for my boards.
I did buy a 0.5 mm velvet as back up, and that might be a good potential option if you need the felt to be a bit thinner. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09DJQCLWB

Yes, exactly. Definitely cannot be considered a "bug" or a "defect" if the stock pieces work fine, which they do.

Thanks for the link for the other felt, have some of that on the way. That may be what I need for my other project as well.

It is definitely from square to square.

I am done messing with them on the Air board, since they work fine on the Evo.

I remember them mentioning this on their Reddit sub but not sure that has anything to do with my issue as all my sensors are flush and do not bulge.

Is it reasonable to guess that with some thinner felt the pieces would work on the Air?

Rsava

Well, I may retry when the thinner felt @vitualis inked to in post #700 but I don't know if I will or not. If I do I will let you know what happens.

Just a thought, depending on the temperature and humidity conditions of your room, you may want to insert the sensors very slightly protruding from the wooden chess pieces.

But they work on all squares on the Evo, and most of the other squares on the Air.

Example: one white Rook works on a1, does not work on h1; yet works on every Evo square.

The white Queen works on d1, does not work on f2; yet works on every Evo square.

This happens with all the pieces.

To try it without any piece (so the depth it is placed in the piece has no bearing), I tried:

A black King sensor (not in a piece) sitting on a piece of the felt, works on b3, yet it flashes intermittently on g1.

This tells me it has nothing to do with the placement of the sensors and everything to do with that clump of squares not being able to detect the sensor on the felt I am using on those squares only.

I have just redone my felts with thinner felts & it works very well with all lights showing on the air wink

Nice. I get my thinner felt in tomorrow. Will try it out on a few pieces.

Rsava

@lighthouse - how did you remove the glue leftover when you pull off the old felts? I don't want to use any solvent that might remove the finish.

Because it was quite fresh glue , the felts came of easy plus with a scraping with a sharp scalpel around the base . Bingo wink

That's cool! The thicker felt is more "luxurious", but only if it works. happy.png

Do you have a link to the type of thinner felt you used?

Stockfishdot1

Here's the link that was provided earlier https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09DJQCLWB

Rsava

@mvk20 - I think it was this, this is what @vitualis posted yesterday.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CLCQV32L?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

Comes in 3 colors, red, black, and white.

And you are absolutely correct - only if it works ... happy.png

mvk20

Oh cool thanks - I saw that link, but I knew @vitualis didn't have to use it, and I wasn't sure that's what @Stockfishdot1 used. Good to hear the experience of someone who actually used that exact type to see how it worked. Wish they had a few more colors, but again, more important for it to work than anything else.

No I got it from a shop here that 's sell stuff cheaply ,was very lucky it had some thin felts sheets for 1 euro in a mixed bag of colours in stock . So redid my set in red felts .
