3D chess

Has anyone ever had this idea before? I would be like regular chess, except with multiple boards stacked on top of each other (spaced out, of course). There could be new pieces added that could moved vertically between the boards, as well as the normal 2-D movements of the pieces on one plane.

Thoughts?

It's impossible!

Yes, someone thought of this. And its even available as an app! (And the guy from this thread is working on it too: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess960-chess-variants/new-true-3d-chess )

I thought only two or three boards would be stacked, just to add more flair. And only few pieces would be added, making it less complicated

yes, that was what I was thinking, except the two armies would start on the same plane, so that they would contact earlier. Thank you!

how is this hard to believe??? I don't understand - just set up a stand to hold three chess boards. When you want to move the piece through the boards, simply pick it up and put it on the square where its going to be...

Raumschach seems like it would be a pretty fun 3d variant. I never have had a chance to play it though.

grolk

yes, that is basically what I am talking about

I dont like 3D.....gives me headaches!

3DPG

Yes it is very possible:

The details are also shown here. That page shows the chess notation (Aa1-Ba1 - Rook moves down one square) and more pictures and how to play. The game takes about the same amount of time as regular chess - but a lot more exciting from the very 1st move!Surprised

I think the OP is referring to something like this

grolk

no, more like what 3dpg is referring to. Just two boards in one game

Well this is an old thread, but is anyone still interested in exploring this? I am, I've been experimenting, any one interested in a conversation?
