I generally go and do something useful if I am getting fed up losing at chess.  Ideally by helping someone out; there's always someone around who could do with a hand.  You may realise then that chess is pointless and not worth worrying about.

To be good at chess you have to learn about your emotions, will power, and effort. Sometimes you will see a move and your impulse will be to play it. The laziness inside you will try to make you stop looking for a better move and just play that one.

It takes will power, self control, and self knowledge to bolster the part of you that can beat the lazy habit. It takes these same things to keep looking for a better way when you see one way doesn't work.

Getting better at chess is, among other things, improving these parts of yourself. If you're able to sit and power through a difficult problem for 20 minutes, or an hour, then I really doubt you'll have a problem stopping yourself from playing a blitz game and I really doubt you'll have a problem sitting and figuring out a new way to try to get yourself to stop being depressed by blitz games.

My guess is you aren't trying to improve yourself on these fronts, you're choosing the easier choice, the low effort, instant gratification, easy choice, chasing those fast, exciting wins. But you can see how this only digs the hole deeper.

The more you give into laziness, the weaker you become.

you seem to have subconsciously programmed yourself, either by design or default, to feel bad in response to a temporary setback. just reprogram yourself bud. you get busy livin' or you get busy dyin'.

when all the experts' advice falls in a hole, listen to a newb.

I was so angry losing in bullet or blitz that I smashed my PC mouse once, so I play it very rare now. When I lose a game in correspodence chess, I have no hard feelings anymore, just move on to the next game. So, everyone hates to be defeated in chess, but some people deal better with situation after they lose a game. My advice - play correspodence chess :)

Being defeated in chess is something you do to yourself in your head. When you see that as a fact, you can choose to stop beating yourself up. Gotta go! Ernest is being crapped on by a bunch of hoods.

You've won more blitz games than you've lost, TomPetty...

Hi, Tom.  I suspect that you really don't hate chess, but become very frustrated when you lose.  I payed veryerious tournament chess from 1952 to 1970.  As I got strngr I stopped hving fun at it and working at it more.  I finally stopped cold tukey and resigned a 6 game match I was playing . It cost me my master's rating but I didn't care. I have continued postal chess and have done well at it.  You can analyze and, in effect, "take back" moves.  At one time I was very strong  at 5 minute chess, having won two national intercollegiate championships. Now, I still enjoy fast chess but will never be as strong as I was.   od luck! you may just be going thru a stage

Play the game just to surprise the opponent

There are too many inducements to take chess too seriously.  Thousands and thousands of books, GMs trying to talk you into lessons, and now Internet analysis and games.  What's really scary about chess is how much anger and bad sportsmanship it seems to engender.  Just play for fun.

The OP was on the site 5 hours ago, so I guess he got over his problem or at least accommodated himself to a life of chess depression.

Or, y'know, it might be time trouble stopping him from looking for a better move.
