The two prisoners shout out chess moves from cell to cell throughout the day and night playing game after game. The other prisoners have to turn on their radios at night to block out the noise to try to get some sleep.
Chess seems to be a rather popular past time in prisons and possibly it is a theraputic way of getting ahead of their past. Although in these two prisoners cases it seems to be a bit too late for that as they were put in prison for killing.
