Play Like A World Champion: Kramnik And Controversy
The 1990s and 2000s were a crazy time in the chess world. Try to find the moves of the champions of the era!
In 1993 the winner of the Candidates cycle was British GM Nigel Short. Short and Kasparov didn't agree with FIDE's terms for the match and held their own world championship. Between 1993 and 1996 there were two separate cycles, one with the classical lineage, and FIDEs system, which included matches and tournaments. In 2000 Kramnik shocked Kasparov to take the title and later won a match with Veselin Topalov in 2006 to reunite the competing cycles.
