Introduction:

Greeting everyone! Today, I looked up "Queen's Gambit" under book openings, and found over 200 results! To start, I am going to review the main ideas of the Queen's Gambit. While this may seem simple, it is required to understand some of the more obscure lines.

Although there are many ways to transpose, the Queen's Gambit usually starts with a double queen-pawn structure created by the moves 1. d4 d5. Then, white breaks with 2. c4 to force a decision.

However, one should note that although this move offers a temporary pawn sacrifice, it is not a "gambit" in the conventional sense of the word. Black will never be able to retain the pawn without serious consequences. Here, black has three main options.

Queen's Gambit Accepted:

The first and most solid response is the Queen's Gambit Accepted, which is characterized by 2...cxd4. While not as common as other moves, this line gains some time for black while white recaptures. Nevertheless, later, once the bishop captures the pawn, it will be pointing right at f7, and black must play e6.

Although many people choose lines with e4, 3. e3 is much stronger in view of 3...e5 4. d5 f5! White plans to play Nf3, take the pawn, and develop naturally. Black, meanwhile, chooses to play moves like c5 and trade off into an IQP position. Protecting the pawn leads to trouble.

Queen's Gambit Declined:

Although the Queen's Gambit Accepted is strong, it is good to notice that most class players play the move 2...e6. This response encourages a positional game that very often leads to draws.

Although move order is not very important, white will generally reply 3. Nc3. Play follows with 3...Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7. White plans to continue with Nf3, e3, Bd3, O-O, and possibly Qc2. Many lines will transpose here.

Semi-Slav and Slav Defenses:

At high levels, the move 2...c6 is by far the most popular reply to the Queen's Gambit. The ideas here are complicated, and further study is required. However, in the Semi-Slav play will generally continue 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 after which white can opt for either the positional Meran Variation with 5. e3, or the sharp Botvinnik and Moscow lines with 5. Bg5.

In the Slav lines, black will instead play 4...dxc4. To prevent b5, white must respond with 5. a4. The pawn must be regained quickly or white will face some severe consequences.

Sidelines and Variations:

Although there is a plethora of sidelines and variations in the Queen's Gambit, I would simply like to mention one here. On chess.com, I have noticed a great number of people playing the Marshall Defense, in which black plays 2...Nf6. White can quickly punish him with 3. cxd5 and if 3...Nxd5, 4. e5. If black plays 3...Qxd5, 4. Nc3 wins for white.
