Hello fellow runners and chess players,

I recently completed my first race of 2024 and it was a 10k. My goal for the race was to go sub-35.

At the beginning of March I attained a bit of plantar fasciitis so switched all of my training to a grass field. I built a lot of fitness doing easy runs and interval training on grass! However, two days before the race I caught a terrible infection; a sore throat and cough.

I was stubborn and decided to run because I had been training so much but I knew I would not go under 35 minutes. I did the first half at an easier pace in 19:16. The second half I felt better and ran 17:25 for a finishing time of 36:41. Yes, I won the small race in a relatively quick time but it came with a consequence. The next day I was very sick and had to start medication.

It was a lesson to be learned: REST is essential when sick and it is not worth pushing your body. I took nearly two weeks off from any running and am now slowly getting back into it. Let me know how your training for 2024 is going and if you have had any similar experiences.
