Henry Ernest Dudeney (1857-1930), was a 19-20th century mathematician and author. He wrote several puzzle books, featuring primarily logic puzzles.

In his book Amusements in Mathematics, he gives several retro-ish puzzles. Although by modern standards the amount of cooking is completely unacceptable, he was decidedly not a retro (or indeed chess) specialist after all. Here I reproduce and rephrase some relevant problems for interest.
