Another powerful tactic that's easy to find and common is the pin. In a pin, you attack a piece such that if it were to move away, a more powerful piece would be exposed:

The most powerful tactic in my opinion is the skewer. The skewer attacks a piece such a that if it were to move it would expose a lower value piece. Because it attacks a high value piece, it is much more forcing than a pin:
