have you ever found yourself in this position before, here is what you do.

first off we have to know trading the bishop for the knight is an equal trade (3 points each). It’s not a productive move.

as you can see from this current position after the trade now the black team has developed their queen and is attacking the weak square next to the kings pawn.

what you do in this position instead is retreat back to the h4 square. Then if they play their pawn out to g5 then you go to g3.

now your bishop is a little stuck but that is easy to overcome by moving some pawns developing your pieces and then the game is still pretty much equal.

the reason we did not do the trade for the knight is because in the middlegame and endgame the bishop is the better piece.

later in the game you can create a bishop-queen battery to deliver checkmate in this example above.
