Strong Singapore representation at the World Senior Chess Championships
Singapore recorded her best World Senior Championships result up to date with our representatives in the Men over-50 category IM Chan Peng Kong and FM Teo Kok Siong finishing 35th (6.5/11) and 44th (6/11) respectively in the 138 player strong field. NM Choong Liong On scored 4.5/11 for 144th position (out of 192 players) in the Men over-65 category though he had a good finish by beating FM Valenti Giuseppe in the final round.
The event seems to be getting stronger and stronger. As FIDE Director General GM Emil Sutovsky put it "this year FIDE allocated 30.000 Euro on the top of the prize fund, and we were happy to see a lot of great players attending". Indeed, Kok Siong faced 2 GMs, 6 IMs and 1 NM while Peng Kong had to fend off 2 GMs, 1 IM and 4 FMs to attain their personal bests.
Here are what I consider strong instructional examples from our representatives:
First up, a textbook example of the thematic e4-e5 pawn sacrifice in the Modern Benoni from Kok Siong.
Next up, Peng Kong capitalizes on a standard Catalan/Slav positional trap skillfully and presses home the advantage by boxing in Black and removing all possible counter-play.
Another big squeeze from Peng Kong when his opponent mis-used a 'New Weapon in the King's Indian'...
Finally, two cool tactical examples by Choong and Kok Siong...
