Jun Wei crushes fellow Olympians to win the Christmas Blitz by a mile!

In a tussle of Chess Olympians with an average rating of close to ELO 2300, FM Lee Jun Wei  (Batumi 2018 representative) romped home with an outstanding 5.5/6 to win the event by a clear 2.5 points margin! His performance rating was only 2719, no biggie, nothing to shout about.

It didn't start off well for Jun Wei as FM Ong Chong Ghee (Moscow 1994 and Istanbul 2000 representative) conned him into an unlikely draw a piece down.

FM Ong Chong Ghee, bullet chess extraordinaire

But he got into the groove and his solid (snooze inducing- he called it) play clinched him point after point as he blanked out IM Terry Toh (Moscow 1994 representative) and CM Benjamin Foo (Baku 2016 representative) 2-0.

IM Terry Toh, whose 'percentage chess' earned him 2nd place.

He calls himself a positional player...(ya..right...)

Jun Wei didn't feel inclined to show any of the 'boring games' in which he outlasted his illustrious opponents but offered up this sac-xy game where he ditched his queen in search of a brilliant finish.

Ben had a torrid time but managed a final round win over FM Ong to end on a decent note.

So, congratulations to Jun Wei for becoming the Christmas Blitz Champ by a mile and a very Merry Christmas to all readers!
