CM Bibek Thing Secures Third Position, Nearly Secures First IM Norm

Nepal , a country mainly situated in the Himalayas has a population of nearly 30 million(29,192,480 as per 2021 Census). Sports is one of the popular ways in Nepal to relax, have fun and to interact with friends and family members. The most played sport is Cricket followed by football. Nepal declared Volleyball as its National Sport on 23 May 2017.


Chess in Nepal

Despite being known in every house hold, many people don't have knowledge about chess tournaments being held in the country. Nepal joined FIDE in 1988 ,made its first appearance in Chess Olympiad after beginning of the twenty first century(2004) and got its first title player FM Manish Hamal in 2009 AD. Now there are 22 Titled Players. As of today, there are 3861 registered players in FIDE and among them 1005 are rated chess players. The search for Nepal's first International Master(IM) is still on.

A Ray of Hope : CM Bibek Thing

CM Bibek Thing is the top rated player of Nepal with current live rating of 2260!(his highest rating was 2288) and is one of the title players who is chasing the IM title. Thing gained CM title in 2015 and represented Nepal In World Rapid Chess Championship 2019, Chess Olympiads and was winner of Moscow Group C.

Let's look at his win against Xu, Xiangyu(2582) in 2019.

Along with FM Rupesh Jaiswal ,Thing received sports scholarship in RUDN University, Moscow on co-ordination with FIDE and Nepal chess Association.

It was the perfect opportunity pursue the dream of becoming an IM and he nearly secured an IM Norm in IM III - 22 Djenovici MNE.
He scored 5.5 points out of 9 and secured 3rd place. In Third Saturday' Mixed GM-IM Djenovici Herceg Novi (MNE) he scored 5 points and secured 4th place.
